Sudarshana Homam | Legend states that Sanjana, the Sun God’s wife confided to her father that she was unable to embrace her husband because of the intense heat emanating from his being. The divine architect Vishwakarma then proceeded to shave off the hottest parts of the Sun. It was from these shavings that the ‘Sudarshana Chakra’ was created. Lord Vishnu ultimately assumed this celestial object as his primary weapon.
Though used rarely, the Sudarshana Chakra struck terror in the detractors of the holy order. Whenever demonic forces threatened the cosmic order, Lord Vishnu used this weapon to re-establish dharma. It is also stated that Vishnu used the Sudarshana Chakra to behead the head of the demon Swarbhanu when he drank amrita (nectar of immortality). As he had already sipped the nectar of immortality, the head of Swarbhanu manifested as ‘Rahu,’ and his body manifested as ‘Ketu.’ These two are considered as shadow planets, and play a vital role in the field of Astrology.
