Karadayan Nombu

Karadayan Nombu is one of the popular fasting observances accompanied by some rituals fervently celebrated by the married women in Tamilnadu. The event falls on a Meena Sankranti day when the sun moves from Kumba Rashi to Meena Rashi and is celebrated somewhere during the junction of the Tamil month Maasi and Panguni. Karadai is the name of a dish offered during the worship and the name of the event ensues from it. The story behind this observance is highly interesting.

Karadayan Nombu or Savitri Vratham is a traditional tamilnadu festival of fasting wherein married women will pray for the wellness and long life of their husbands. Karadayan nombu should be done exactly in the time when tamil month ‘Masi’ ends and the next month ‘Panguni’ starts.

The reason why this fasting is carried out is that “Savithri fought with yema to save her husband’s life”, the sameway the married women should fast on this auspicious day for long life of their husbands.
