Samskaram are a collection of sixteen sacred rituals performed at various milestones throughout a Hindu's life. These ceremonies symbolize spiritual growth, purification, and integration of the individual into different stages of life.

Samskaras are believed to संस्कारित ( संस्कृत - संस्कारित ) - संस्कारित (saṁskārita) or संस्कारवान् (saṁskāravān) - meaning "refined" or "imbued with संस्कार as (saṁskāras)".

List of Samskaras (Ceremonies) Offered:

  • Aksharabhyasam: Akshara means 'letters / alphabets' and Abhyasam means 'practice'. Together they mean "the study of practical letters". The ceremony is performed by the maternal uncle (Mothers brothers)/ Father/ Paternal Uncle along with the family keeping the child in his lap holding the child’s right hand forefinger and make the child write the Om followed by the panchaakshari mantra 'Namah Shivayaah'.
  • Annaprashanam: Annaprashanam means introducing solid food to the child usually feeding Payasam or Paluannam. This ritualistic ceremony initiates the introduction of solid food for the baby. It is also believed that Annaprasana ceremony will help to propitiate speech. The meaning of Annaprasana is anna=rice and prasana= to enter. After this ritual is carried out, the child can be introduced to different foods.
  • Avani Avittam / Upakarma: Upakarma "Beginning" also called Avani Avittam is a Vedic ritual practiced by Hindus of the Brahmin caste. This ritual is also practiced by the Kshatriya and Vaishya community, who are dvijas and therefore have the rights to do Sandhyavandanam, the daily ablution ritual.
  • Engagement: Engagement ceremony is performed on an auspicious day for the bride and the groom and their parents as per their nakshatras and chandrashtamam is also seen for fixing the time for the engagement. It is done both in the morning and also in the evening.
  • Namakaranam:  It is performed on the 11th day from Baby’s Birth. It is auspicious when performed in the morning.
  • Seemantham: Seemantham is performed during the 7th month of pregnancy. The date and the lagna have to be fixed during a Shuba Muhurth date as per the nakshatra of the husband and wife.
  • Upanayanam: Upanayanam is done for the male child when he attains the age of 7 years this ceremony is performed by fixing a Muhurtham based on the birth nakshatra of the boy.   • Vivaham / Marriage: Kalyanam / Marriage is a commitment, a decision to do, all through life, that which will express your Love for one’s spouse. It is generally a transitional state from Brahmacharayashram to Grihasthashramam.
